Thin Computing
|
|
Overview
Businesses spend millions of dollars each year to ensure that their desktop computer systems are secure, reliable, free viruses and spyware. Thin computing solutions can easily and affordably eliminates most of these Problems.
Thin clients run Windows, Java, Linux, UNIX, and web-based applications securely on central servers. Applications do not traverse the network and are not downloaded to the thin client, eliminating the security and bandwidth issues common with PCs.
Key Business Efficiencies
|
- Total cost of ownership
The average annual maintenance costs for a PC are four to seven times its acquisition costs. This is not true for thin clients. You automatically eliminate security patching, AV and licensing cost for multiple applications.
- Reliability
Thin clients are nine times more reliable than PCs, because there are no mechanical parts, such as fans or disk drives to break down. With no local storage of applications or data, it is impossible to download viruses, malware, or software that causes conflicts with more business-critical applications.
- Scalability
With thin computing, network infrastructure expansion is relatively easy; your IT staff just needs to setup additional thin clients to connect to the central server.
- Security
Unlike PCs, thin clients have no local storage devices. Thus thin clients are not vulnerable to viruses and other spyware as long as the servers are protected. Since there is no way to store and remove proprietary information from thin clients, that data is always safe on the server, and compliant with privacy regulations.
- Manageability
Thin clients are much easier to deploy and configure for the simple reason that the software is delivered from the server. So there is very little hands-on installation required (other than connecting the cables). Backing up data is also easy, since all the data resides on the server.
|
| Key Environmental Efficiencies |
- Thin clients are produced with less material and energy than PCs. Less material to produce implies less to recycle.
- Up to 90% of a thin client device is recyclable.
- Thin clients meet WEEE recycling standards.
- Thin clients output much less heat and require much less power for air conditioning.
- Thin clients are easily supported remotely, thus requiring less travel time by support staff for maintenance.
